The first West Kimberley Women’s Fishing Clinic Series has come to an end.

Since it started at the Mary Island Fishing Club on March 25, the women involved have spent their Sunday afternoons learning everything from fishing and maritime rules, knots and rigs, how to reverse trailers, fillet a fish, cast a throw net and how to spend lots of money at a tackle store.

Some participants even took the extra step and obtained their recreational skipper’s tickets.

We put it all into practice in the final session and headed to Valentine Island and Huon Creek for a practical fishing session last Sunday. Catches included cod, fingermark, blue-nose salmon, mulloway and a bucket-load of catfish.

A huge shout-out to Ruth Marsden, who beat her nerves and successfully skippered her vessel for the first time without her husband on board.
