Homecoming for Broome band
They may have graced the stages of the country’s top festivals and high-profile events, but now three brothers are returning home for an intimate evening in their own backyard.
Broome’s Harry, Albert and Elwood Gray have each made names for themselves in their own right, but have spent the better part of the year touring together as The Gray Brothers in venues across the State.
But the siblings do things a little differently when they are back in their home town.
The folk trio will invite the public into their backyard next week for an intimate gig, serving their guests pizzas from woodfired ovens while they play their own tunes.
Oldest brother Harry, 25, said similar concerts had been special nights for the band and they were looking forward to this one.
“We have been doing house concerts around Broome for a while now,” he said.
“What we enjoy about it most is that connection with the crowd — everyone is there for the music.
“It is a real honest, homely vibe that people have grown to love.
“The last one we did was amazing, so many people rocked up and it made for one of our most unforgettable nights.”
Although he has supported acts such as Missy Higgins and Paul Kelly in his career, Harry said it was shows like this that made him nervous.
“It is kind of terrifying as a performer,” he said.
“You are used to being at all these rowdy venues all the time but then you are in this real intimate venue and it really makes us step up our game.”
The three brothers will support one another as they each perform their own original pieces. “We’re all vocalists with our own music, but we have supported each other throughout the tour,” Harry said. “We’ve been slowly making our way back home, playing a huge amount of gigs along the way, but cannot wait for this one. They’re very unique, like nothing seen around Broome, so I encourage everyone to come along.”
The Broome house concert is the final stop on the band’s 18-leg tour around WA.
It will take place on June 8, with tickets still available at www.graybrothersmusic.com.
