Over the Moon:
Kalki Moon is always about quality not quantity, and developing a world- acclaimed boutique range of products

A FIRM commitment to a quality product and a clear pride in his region has proven hugely successful for Rick Prosser.
Looking back over the year, it is amazing to see how far Kalki Moon Distilling and Brewing Company has come. It’s now an award-winning name throughout Australia.
When Kalki Moon Distilling and Brewing Company opened its doors in March 2017, it was the realisation of a lifelong dream for Rick, shared with his brother-in-law Michael Nash and close friend Paul Mark.
Rick said by starting small, Kalki Moon was about quality not quantity, and developing a world-acclaimed boutique range of products, sharing his 17-plus years’ experience in the alcohol industry.
“We did our research before launching the company with vodka and gin, something that had never been done in Australia before and we have seen a real demand, especially for a classic series that is affordable to a large market,” he said.
“Gin is a very refreshing drink and, through the free tastings at our distillery, we are able to further educate consumers on different ways to mix it to be enjoyed by a variety of palates both male and female.
“We are very appreciative of how locals have been our ambassadors, both with the gins and the liqueur range and we are lucky because Bundaberg continues to attract a wide variety of international guests who enjoy our flavours.
“We have found that locals and visitors alike are drawn to the daily tours of our distillery so they can see firsthand the detailed process that goes into making the different forms of alcohol and also sample a taste.”
As a distiller, Rick spent 13 years at Bundaberg Rum before helping to establish the Waterview Distilling Company and credits both with providing him with excellent training and allowing him to develop a good taste profile.
His knowledge of blends and flavours has helped develop more products as the company has grown and in particular different options such the most recent Pink Gin Liqueur which is a lovely blend of elderflower and rose.
Not only has the response been positive from consumers, but the awards have been plentiful, starting with three medals at the International Wine and Spirits Competition in London in July 2017.
That was followed by gold at this year’s Australian Distilled Spirits Competition in Melbourne for their Premium London Dry Gin, the first Queensland distillery to take out this coveted award.
Solstice, a barrel aged gin, took out a silver award, while bronze was awarded to the distillery’s Classic Gin, Classic Vodka, Choc/Hazelnut Liqueur and Choc/Mint Liqueur.
But it doesn’t stop there as this local beverage company has kept the momentum rolling and has distribution of its premium gin and liqueurs through Dan Murphy’s around Australia.
While Rick now intends to slow down product releases and focus on continuing to provide a high-quality product, he shows no sign of sitting back and relaxing just yet.
The distillery is set to expand to allow greater space to effectively make its products and will ultimately mean the family business can employ more staff to help make this possible.
Rick and his wife Kylie have also been invited to the Singapore Asia Food and Beverage Expo which is a great place to continue to grow exports and really highlight this strong Queensland brand.
“Kalki Moon was born out of a passion for what I do and I am proud of all we have achieved here and am looking to a strong future in a region that continues to be always known for a quality drop,” he said.
