Se­rial thief be­hind bars

AN ECHUCA man ac­cused of com­mit­ting a crime spree across five towns will re­main in jail for an­other three weeks.

Zach­ery Il­s­ley, 22, ap­peared in cus­tody at Bendigo Mag­is­trates Court on Wed­nes­day charged with four counts of bur­glary, two counts of theft of a mo­tor ve­hi­cle and one count of ar­son.

The mat­ters were ad­journed to the same court on Novem­ber 10 for men­tion, with Il­s­ley re­manded in cus­tody un­til then.

The crime spree oc­curred on Septem­ber 12, with a ute stolen from Kyabram, fol­lowed by bur­glar­ies at two Co­bram ho­tels, a Strath­mer­ton ser­vice sta­tion, a Nathalia su­per­mar­ket and Rochester hard­ware store early the next day.

Of­fend­ers used the stolen ute to ram raid a Co­bram ho­tel and Rochester’s hard­ware store.

Il­s­ley has been in cus­tody since his ar­rest on Septem­ber 14 af­ter be­ing al­legedly found in a car stolen from Rochester.

Po­lice be­lieve the car was stolen af­ter the of­fend­ers aban­doned and set fire to an­other ve­hi­cle in Rochester, which was al­legedly used in ear­lier bur­glar­ies.

A co-ac­cused from Ton­gala has been charged with bur­glary and theft of­fences.

He has been bailed to ap­pear in Echuca Mag­is­trates Court on Novem­ber 8.
