Serial thief behind bars
AN ECHUCA man accused of committing a crime spree across five towns will remain in jail for another three weeks.
Zachery Ilsley, 22, appeared in custody at Bendigo Magistrates Court on Wednesday charged with four counts of burglary, two counts of theft of a motor vehicle and one count of arson.
The matters were adjourned to the same court on November 10 for mention, with Ilsley remanded in custody until then.
The crime spree occurred on September 12, with a ute stolen from Kyabram, followed by burglaries at two Cobram hotels, a Strathmerton service station, a Nathalia supermarket and Rochester hardware store early the next day.
Offenders used the stolen ute to ram raid a Cobram hotel and Rochester’s hardware store.
Ilsley has been in custody since his arrest on September 14 after being allegedly found in a car stolen from Rochester.
Police believe the car was stolen after the offenders abandoned and set fire to another vehicle in Rochester, which was allegedly used in earlier burglaries.
A co-accused from Tongala has been charged with burglary and theft offences.
He has been bailed to appear in Echuca Magistrates Court on November 8.
