Horror smash kills woman

Campaspe News - - FRONT PAGE -

A WOMAN has died and eight others were injured, including children, after a horror smash near Elmore on Friday.

The fatal collision happened on the Northern Hwy at Runnymede after a Toyota Prado four-wheel drive veered onto the wrong side of the road, slamming into a Volkswagen sedan travelling in the opposite direction.

The woman was a passenger in the back seat of the Volkswagen when the crash happened and died at the scene.

Investigators believe the four-wheel drive, containing two women and four children, was travelling south towing a tandem trailer with a car on board when it crossed onto the incorrect side of the road shortly after 3pm.

Two teenagers were flown to the Royal Children’s Hospital, two adults and an infant were taken by road to Echuca hospital, while three adults were conveyed to Bendigo hospital.

All those taken to hospital were admitted in stable conditions.

The accident shut down a section of the Northern Hwy for several hours on Friday evening, with drivers being re-directed back into Elmore and further east along the Midland Hwy.

The death brought Victoria’s road toll to 279, which is 36 more than the same time last year.

It comes on the eve of the festive season, with Victoria Police announcing it will patrol the roads in record numbers.

Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer said officers would be out in force, focusing on speed, alcohol and drug checks.

‘‘The community would expect nothing less, but police alone can’t keep our roads safe. It’s a shared responsibility for all who use the road,’’ he said.
