Tennis pelicans soar
IN hot and windy conditions this week the Pelicans defeated the Robins 35-5 to 18-1.
Shelley Cotchin and Lauren Coghill got off to a great start for Robins, clinching the first set 7-5, but the match turned Pelicans way after that.
Wrens defeated the Finches 31-3 to 28-3 in a closer one for the Wrens.
Bev Seddon and Bec Hocking took the first set for Wrens 6-3, with Bec dynamite on the net, but the match tightened up as the day went on with Judy Anderson and Brooke Walkley taking the second 7-5 for Finches.
The match went down to the wire as the Wrens went in to the final set four games ahead of Finches 25 to 21.
Unfortunately Finches didn’t have enough to clinch take the match even after winning the final set 7-6.
Emus (33-5) defeated Flamingoes (14-1) and there was no time for any mucking around as Annette Fitzgibbon and her daughter Sherrie had a 12.30pm deadline.
Emus took the first set 6-3 from Dawn Leppard and Judy Riordans fill in Emily Mitchell served them hard and fast, not bad for a 14-year-old.
Flamingoes tried valiantly to claw back the Emus lead but it was too much in the end.
The Jays and Toucans had a nail biter on Court seven, with the Jays winning 32-4 to Toucans 29-2.
The lead went back and forwards throughout the day with two tie breakers.
The final set went to the Jays 6-1 which certainly decided it as Toucans had gone in two games ahead of Jays with 28.
Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year to players who will be refreshed and raring to go when play resumes on January 31, 2017. Hopefully on the new hardcourts.
