Looking back on the millennial drought that hit us all so hard

10 years ago Tuesday, May 22, 2007 Goulburn and Campaspe irrigators will not have a water allocation at the start of the irrigation season if there is not continuous heavy rainfall in the storage areas.

Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) last week confirmed its February outlook for little or no water allocation in any irrigation system by July 2.

If dry conditions continue, Goulburn and Campaspe irrigators are also expected to have a zero water allocation at the start of the season on August 15.

This comes on top of a zero per cent allocation for Campaspe irrigators last season and a finishing allocation of only 29 per cent for Goulburn irrigators.

GMWsaid the prolonged drought had severely depleted water resources across northern Victoria. 30 years ago Tuesday, May 26, 1987 A new industry manufacturing transportable homes could be set up in Rochester if a planning permit application is successful.

Colin and Julie Dunstan, who are northwest Victorian agents for Napier Homesteads, have applied for permission to use a piece of land on the Northern Highway to manufacture and display the homes.

The piece of land they hope to use is part of the old sanitary depot site, next to Yalooka Landscape Supplies, which set up recently.

Because the land is owned by Rochester Shire Council, permission must be obtained from the Ministry of Planning, as council cannot issue a permit for land it owns.

It is not known how long approval will take to come through, however, in the meantime the Dunstans have been given approval to display a home on the site. 100 years ago Saturday, May 19, 1917 The Rochester State School Committee should not be influenced to inactivity in the matter of establishment of an Elementary High School by the reply furnished the other day by Mr McKenzie, MLA for the district.

According to that gentleman, there is no chance of getting the money for the purpose under existing circumstances and the suggestion that the state might do some- thing if the bulk of the cost were borne by local residents in a most unrighteous one.

In spite of the statement to the contrary, very few places where such schools have been established have been called upon to contribute to their cost.
