Tigers eliminated after Bomber blitz
Rochester’s Jacob Atley marks strongly in the Goulburn Valley Football League under 18 semi-final against Kyabram.
KYABRAM’S under 18 football side proved too strong for Rochester in the Goulburn Valley Football league semifinal at Euroa on Saturday, ending the Tigers’ season with a 60-point hammering.
The Tigers always knew it would be tough against the top-of-the-table Bombers and were outclassed by a better side.
Kyabram came out firing to kick three goals and five behinds in the opening quarter and though Rochester responded with one of its own, it found itself 15 points in arrears at the first break.
The Bombers kept up the intensity in the second term, Will McDonell being a dangerous player up forward ending the day with four goals and making things difficult for Tigers’ defenders.
Kyabram kicked the first three goals of the second before Rochester finally found the board, but another two Bombers’ goals followed putting the Tigers 43 points behind at half time.
Jacob Atley got the Tigers off to a solid start in third to kick the opening goal and the defenders worked hard to limit Kyabram’s scoring shots and keep the ball in their attacking half.
But Kyabram again proved its might and made the most of its opportunities, kicking the next three for a 53-point lead at the final change.
The fourth quarter went back and forth with Riley Wachter kicking the fourth and final goal for the Tigers, 4.6 (30) to 13.12 (90) was the eventual score.
Cody Toohill delivered one of his best games of the season to be named as Tigers’ best, with Harrison McPhee, Bailey Wileman, Matthew Kellett, Charles Ward and Atley giv- ing other notable performances.
The thirds could take a lot of positives out of the season having won its first finals game in seven years.
Although they were beaten on the day, there was plenty of promising signs for the future of the club with many now stepping up to seniors in 2018. Rochester’s Matt Kellett has nowhere to go.
The Tigers’ Teaghan Bubb was on fire in defence for her side.
