Campaspe News - - NEWS -

A ROCHESTER man was crushed to death in a workplace in Mildura last Tuesday.

The 58-year-old, who is yet to be identified, was loading a bitumen roller onto a tray truck in a depot yard when he was crushed.

Investigators believe the roller moved without warning and pinned the man between the roller and the tray.

Paramedics and police tried to revive the man but he died at the scene.

The site was being used to store plant and machinery for the Murray Basin Rail Project.

Construction company McConnell Dowell, which is the contractor for the project, said in a statement the incident occurred at a separate site that is not managed by that business.

The statement said the death occurred at an “independently operated” facility.

‘‘The site was being used to store plant and machinery for the Murray Basin Rail Project,” the statement read.

‘‘But it is not a site controlled by the McConnell Dowell Martinus Rail Joint Venture (MMJV).

‘‘MMJV is offering counselling to workers and staff and will provide further updates as more details become available.

‘‘McConnell Dowell and Martinus Rail offer sympathy to the family of the deceased.’’

Worksafe Victoria is investigating the incident and police are preparing a report for the coroner.

The man’s death brings the number of Victorians killed at work this year to 21, compared to 24 for the same time last year.

It’s the second workplace fatality within a week in regional Victoria.

The body of a man in his 50s was found on a property at Yarck the week before.

It’s believed he died after falling off his motorbike.
