Get in a jam with the Salvos

THE Salvation Army Rochester is ready to rock with its new program Just Jammin’.

The program is a monthly jam session open to anyone to come and jam, learn new songs and meet other musicians.

Lieutenant Ben Clapton said he was excited for the program to get off the ground.

“This has been an idea that has been germinating for over a year, and I’m really looking forward to having a jam,” he said.

Lt Clapton was trained as a classical violinist, getting his Bachelor of Music from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, but taught himself guitar when he joined the Salvos.

“My corps was a fairly traditional corps, with a large brass band,’’ he said.

‘‘I knew there was no way that my violin would be heard against the band, so I taught myself guitar and joined the praise and worship band.

“I’ve since expanded from praise and worship music and enjoy playing a wide range of differing styles and picking up new songs.

“I’m really hoping that this can be beneficial for not only the musicians in our town, but also our community as a whole.’’

Just Jammin’ grew out of a desire to see an active musical community in Rochester but also from the benefit that music can provide for the wider community.

“Many studies have shown the benefits that playing music and playing music in a group especially has not only on individuals but as a community,’’ Lt Clapton said. ‘‘When you play in a group you start tuning in to others around you and breathing and moving as one.

“The best thing is that anybody can do it — we all have a voice, we can all sing.’’

Just Jammin’ starts on November 10 at 7pm at the Salvation Army hall on the corner of Elizabeth and Ramsay streets, Rochester. The inaugural session will start with a Beatles-themed all-in jam.

Entry is by gold coin donation, and refreshments will be available.
