VICTORIA’S under 18 representative bowls team has welcomed its latest member — Rochester’s Cameron Keenan.

Although only 13 years old, Cameron has been bowling competitively for four years having participated in Bendigo East and Kerang bowls clubs’ senior premierships.

The son of Rochester bowls coach David Keenan, himself a former Victorian bowls representative, Cameron is representing the club in division one, displaying outstanding form that has led to his selection to represent the state.

His first assignment will be in Adelaide in early January when Victoria takes on the might of South Australia in a test match.

Interestingly, Cameron is the only member of the squad to be selected outside the metropolitan area and ranks as the youngest ever player to represent Victoria.

Rochester president Les Walles said the club was thrilled to hear of Cameron’s selection.

“He has been in great form in our senior side which sits equal top of the ladder with Moama,” he said.

“Cameron has a superb delivery and his approach to the game belies his youth. In fact, he has a better grasp of tactics than many who have been playing for years.”

Cameron joined his father David and younger brother Brock, 10, as new recruits at Rochester this year, where both division one and two sides are well placed to be premiership contenders.

Proud father David said the selection was proof country players in any sport can reach the highest levels if they set their minds to it.

“Cam has worked hard at his game and hopefully is an inspiration for other locals to take the next step, no matter what sport they play,” he said.

As for Cameron, he is looking forward to playing for Victoria.

“I’m rapt and I’ll be doing my best to make sure we win,” he said.

Rochester United captain Tim Bubb and Rochester Tigers captain Jake Wright ahead of their weekend clash in honour of late Tigers’ player Matthew Dingwall.
