Last work­ers al­most done

TO­MOR­ROW’S the day.

The last work­ers will walk out of Rochester’s Mur­ray Goul­burn plant for the fi­nal time.

It comes after pro­duc­tion ceased on Jan­uary 24 and the clo­sure on Jan­uary 31.

Ten work­ers have re­mained at the site, com­plet­ing the de­com­mis­sion­ing and re­me­di­a­tion process.

It’s the last step for the plant, although a care­taker will look after it in­def­i­nitely.

How­ever, ac­cord­ing to MG, the com­pany will con­tinue to have a strong pres­ence in Rochester sup­port­ing dairy sup­pli­ers in the re­gion, with about 35 staff em­ployed in the in­bound lo­gis­tics milk col­lec­tion op­er­a­tions, MG Trad­ing store and field ser­vices team.

MG chief ex­ec­u­tive Ari Mervis said: “We thank our Rochester em­ploy­ees for their sig­nif­i­cant con­tri­bu­tion to MG’’.

‘‘The de­ci­sion to close the Rochester site was dif­fi­cult to make, how­ever a nec­es­sary step on the jour­ney to en­sure the com­pet­i­tive­ness of MG,” he said.
