Kez ready for the dreaded hair cut
Kez Moroney is shaving off her dreadlocks to raise money for people in need in Zimbabwe.
IT’S been 13 years since Rochester’s Kez Moroney set eyes on the kids of King George VI Memorial School in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.
Volunteering at the school for more than a year, she left a piece of her heart behind when she returned to Rochester.
And she’s been doing whatever she can to support them from afar ever since.
This time, she’s shaving off her locks.
And while Kez admits it’ll be tough to part with the intricately woven dreads she’s had since her mid-twenties, she knows it’s all worth it if it helps people in need.
“I’ll miss them, I’ve had them for
I know where the money’s going – to support children and provide them with transport, clothing, medicine and an education
15 years — but it’s only hair at the end of the day,” she said.
“And now that I have my baby son, Tayo, I don’t have enough time to keep weaving my hair like I used to.
“Plus I know where the money’s going — to support children and provide them with transport, clothing, medicine and an education.”
Kez worked in Zimbabwe in 2005 after she went on a safari.
“I wanted to volunteer and the camp cook directed me to the school,” she said.
“I worked as a teacher’s aid and ran cooking lessons, because I was a chef at the time.”
Sharnie from New Image Hair and Beauty will donate her time to chop off Kez’s dreads on Saturday, March 24.
Kez is hoping to raise $3000 from the shave.
In addition to supporting the school, a portion of the funds will assist a small village in Zimbabwe.
