Red Army is on the march through town

ROCHESTER is set to turn red for the Sal­va­tion Army’s Red Shield Ap­peal.

Shops in Rochester are en­cour­aged to turn red from to­day un­til May 24 as the Rochester Salvos col­lect for the ap­peal.

Funds raised through the ap­peal fund the work of the Sal­va­tion Army through­out Australia, where they seek to bring hope where it’s needed most.

This in­cludes home­less ser­vices, fam­ily vi­o­lence sup­port, and al­co­hol and other drug de­pen­dency pro­grams.

In Rochester, the Salvos run an emer­gency re­lief ser­vice has sup­ported 239 peo­ple from our com­mu­nity in the past year.

Much of the as­sis­tance given has en­sured lo­cal fam­i­lies have food to eat, but as­sis­tance has been given as

needed in ar­eas of util­i­ties, ac­com­mo­da­tion, school fees, and li­ais­ing with var­i­ous agen­cies to help get peo­ple back on track.

In 2017, Rochester sup­ported the Red Shield Ap­peal by do­nat­ing about $4700.

This year, it hopes to pass the $5000 mark.

Rochester Salvos Lieu­tenant Ben Clap­ton en­cour­aged the town to con­tinue giv­ing gen­er­ously.

“We’re look­ing for­ward to see­ing Rochester turn red for three days, and we thank the Rochester Busi­ness Net­work for sup­port­ing us,” he said.

Rochester Busi­ness Net­work pres­i­dent Glenda Ni­chol said she hoped the town got be­hind the ap­peal.

“Coun­try peo­ple are well known for their gen­eros­ity. Busi­nesses are en­cour­aged to paint the town red in sup­port of the ap­peal and I wish ev­ery­one a very suc­cess­ful event,” she said.

The Sal­va­tion Army will also be col­lect­ing in El­more on May 22 to 24 and in Lock­ing­ton and Goornong on May 26.

There will also be a blan­ket col­lec­tion at half time dur­ing Rochester’s home game against Kyabram on May 27, as well as some ar­eas be­ing door­knocked.
