Hoppers club in a dominant mood

Campaspe News - - LOCAL CLASSIES -

A GREAT weekend of football and netball last weekend at home against Lockington saw Colbo take home wins in all but two matches.

Our senior footballers surged home in the last quarter to defeat a determined and improving Lockington outfit.

Whilst our A grade netballers were able to take home another great win, remaining undefeated with one game left in the first half of the season.

Don’t forget our next game is against North Bendigo in Bendigo, so it is a great chance to support our major sponsors The Old Boundary Hotel after the game.

A great way to prepare yourselves for Sunday, which is the infamous ‘One Day in Colbo’ $2000 Reverse Draw.

Tickets are now due back with payment to Hannah Fuller or Darcy Taylor.

We hope to see as many players, supporters and sponsors there as possible! Netball Primary D Awards this week were hard to choose as every player defended well, intercepted the ball and worked on leading to the ball.

All strategies they have been learning at training and were now applying in their game.

The canteen awards went to Monica and Dana, and the sponsor award went to Alannah who were all outstanding and continued to support younger members in their team.

Well done girls, it’s great to see such a supportive team. U15 — Colbo 41 def LBU 28 The U15s had a sluggish start to the game, with Locky able to get a six goal lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter had some great feeding around the goal ring and accurate shooting, and the girls were able to close in on Locky’s lead.

The mid court worked hard during the third quarter, keeping the ball flowing with some great defensive turnovers, the girls broke even 26-26.

Some smart changes and a refocus at three quarter time saw Colbo come alive and power towards the finishing line with a 13 goal lead.

Well done girls, your stamina and fight to the end truly paid off.

Canteen award: Alex Ingram, Subway award: Zoe McLean. U17 — Colbo 46 def LBU 35 Another impressive game by the under 17 team.

At half time, LBU scored on the siren to be only four behind.

Steph Crouch played a full game in defence, demonstrating good pressure throughout.

Ella Kerlin maintained her momentum in goals and Lili McArdle had excellent holds and defence.

Best on: Anna Lowe and Lili McArdle.

B Reserve — Colbo 28 def LBU 22

B reserve had a great game against Lockington.

The girls came out firing, taking the lead from the first quarter.

The defenders worked hard all game creating many turnovers and also displayed many great plays down the court which enabled them to maintain the lead throughout the game.

Best on went to Mikayla Palmer for her great intercepts and turnovers throughout the game.

In the end the girls defeated Lockington by six goals. B Grade — LBU 39 def Colbo 37 In B grade, Locky gave the Colbo girls a good run for their money, and sadly we couldn’t come away with the win.

The girls were determined to keep up with their opponents.

Some very accurate long bombs from Jam Lowe and the tireless work of Milly Hughes in defence helped narrow the score.

Multiple turnovers from both sides kept the crowd interested right up until the final siren.

Efforts from captain Brydie Lawford created plenty of opportunities to convert in attack.

Georgie Rodger was also dynamic through the midcourt and took some great intercepts out of defence.

Lou Dupuy was ever so strong and consistent in GS again, showing great direction and communication for youngster Mardi Ryan to work into the game.

Colbo continued to take risks and run the ball through the middle of the ground but couldn’t capitalise on their forward drives.

Cooper Hamilton was a ball magnet through the middle of the ground, winning plenty of hard ball and using the ball moving forward.

Will Brown was sensational again in defence, beating his direct opponent and rebounding strongly in transition.

Hugh Hamilton found plenty of his own ball up the ground but also provided a dangerous target deep forward.

Other better players included Darcy Brown whose pressure was terrific and Sam Ryan whose ball skills were elite.

Reserves — Colbo 6.10 (46) def LBU 6.4 (40)

The reserves received a well deserved shock, only just scraping over line against a fired up Lockington outfit.

After a dominant month, Hoppers received their first challenge of the season.

Being pushed to the final siren by the tenacious Cats.

After a slow start the Hoppers were able to weather the storm and rally to the real lead by eight points at three quarter time.

After a hotly contested final quarter, it was the composed Hoppers who were able to control the play and hit the scoreboard, running the game out six points in front.

Tim Hill was terrific again across half back for the Hoppers, rebounding everything that came his way.

Luke Hill provided a cool head across half back, as did Stephen Tuohey who provided plenty of drive in transition.

Other better players included Bubsy who marked strongly on the lead and Charlie Taylor who won plenty of contested ball through the middle of the ground.

Seniors — Colbo 14.16 (100) def LBU 9.8 (62)

The seniors endured a great challenge from a young, spirited Cats line up, eventually running out thirty eight point victors.

Lockington’s pressure and intensity around the contest were elite early, taking the Hoppers by surprise.

After half time the Hoppers lifted their intensity and were able to rein in the Cats and hit the scoreboard, taking a nine point lead into three quarter time.

The final quarter was all green and gold as the Hoppers piled on 5.8 to the Cats 1.3 to stretch the final margin to thirty eight points.

Hadleigh Sirett was enormous in the ruck for the Hoppers, providing first use to the mids and using the ball with precision around the ground.

Damien Carmody continued his dominance over opposition forwards, defending well and offering plenty of drive in transition.

Ryan Hon buried five majors and dished off several more while Sauce Ezard’s tackling pressure created opportunities for the Hoppers small forwards.

Other better players included skipper David Price who was measly in defence and Mitch Bright who collected plenty of ball through the middle of the ground.

Colbo’s A Grade Netballers with the ‘Net Set Go’ program participants before the match against LBU.
