A CHEF-turned-carpenter from Canning Vale is WA’s Apprentice of the Year.

Thirty-year-old Jamie Stewart said he was a jack of all trades and master of none when he decided to hone his carpentry skills and established his Legacy Construction business.

“When I left school I did a chef apprenticeship and went on to the mines,” he said.

“I worked my way up from labourer to project manager and did a couple of Certificate IVs at one of the Tafes.

“I bought a restaurant and had that for a year.

“When I saw the mining boom was starting to turn I saw I was a jack of all trades and master of none.”

Mr Stewart completed his apprenticeship in less than 2½ years and now runs his business full-time.
