Colts revel in rags-to-riches fairytale

CANNING Vale Senior Football Club’s colts side have been named the Western Australian Amateur Football League (WAAFL) Team of the Year after an astonishing undefeated season.

The side won all 16 regular season games before they advanced to the grand final, where they overcame a tough Gosnells outfit to claim victory.

The title marked the end of a fairytale rags-to-riches story, as their premiership came just a year after the team had been forced to disband due to low numbers.

To add icing on the cake, coach Darren Brealey was named the WAAFL Coach of the Year and captain Scott Price won the Association Medal for the fairest and best player in their league.

Brealey said it was “surreal” to win the award and paid tribute to his team and assistant coaches Andrew Fee and Tony Newman for their efforts.

“I’m extremely proud, they worked very hard and I can’t speak highly enough of them, they’re a great bunch of lads,” he said.

“They just come together so well and really enjoy each other’s company.”

Brealey, who had coached 17 members of the squad at junior level, said it had been a challenge to maintain their winning streak throughout the season, but they handled the extra pressure perfectly.

“As the season progressed, the challenge to keep winning got a lot harder, but they took that on,” he said.

“There was a fair bit of pressure going into the grand final, having gone through the season undefeated, but to win was really great for all the boys.”

The Canning Vale colts side celebrate their premiership win.
