Faster bus routes proposed

A PLAN to re-route 200 buses a day through residential streets in Cannington and Wilson – including two current cul-de-sacs that would need reconnecting – is set to be considered at a special City of Canning meeting this month.

Under the plan, routes 72, 100 and 509 would bypass the Albany Highway and Manning Road intersection by turning off the main roads at Richmond Street or Fleming Avenue and using Civic Gardens and Carden Drive.

The Public Transport Authority says the new route would shave three minutes off the journey, benefitting 2000 to 3000 bus users on an average weekday.

“Bus infrastructure improvements benefit not only bus passengers – as well as moving buses from busy roads, projects like these also take more cars off the road by making public transport a more attractive option for motorists,” spokesman David Hynes said.

The proposal also includes reconnecting Civic Gardens and Fleming Avenue as a bus-only link, to ensure a continuous route. Minor intersection works would be required at Fleming Avenue and George Street West, and where Civic Gardens meets Carden Drive.

Following a petition organised by Cannington resident George Beacroft, an information session will be held on Wednesday, November 15. The PTA is expected to send a representative to the two-hour session, which begins at 6pm.

Mr Beacroft acknowledged the work of the City of Canning in arranging next week’s community information session, given the change in make-up of the council since a previous session in late September.

The council is set to consider the proposal on Thursday, November 23.
