Good innings for a premiership club

Canning Times - - BENTLEY/CANNINGTON -

FRIENDSHIP has proved to be the vital ingredient as Canning Vale Cricket Club celebrates its 20th anniversary.

Started by a group of friends, the club has won three premierships in two decades, including the Perth Cricket Association third grade competition last year, which saw them promoted to second grade this season.

Club president Michael Patino said the club was built on friendship.

“You get to play with your mates and that’s a big thing, it’s how the club started and evolved over time,” he said.

“We all started as friends and then friends of friends came down and it started a domino effect.

“Our player base has grown as the suburb has grown and the cultures and backgrounds of the players are reflective of the area now.”

As part of its 20th birthday celebrations, the club is holding a family fun day and the annual Cheney Cup on Sunday, November 19 at Canning Vale Oval.

Named after two of the club’s founding brothers Craig and Glen Cheney, the cup is a Twenty20 game played between the clubs’ past and present members, which Patino said was always a fun day out.

“It’s always a good opportunity for past players to come out and meet the newer players and get to know them a bit,” he said.

The club boasts three teams, including second and fifth grade sides for the competitive players and a one day side.

Patino said they were on the hunt for new members of all abilities and backgrounds.

The club trains at Canning Vale Oval on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 5pm to 7.30pm, and plays each Saturday at Canning Vale Oval and Clifton Park.
