Fertile ground in grant for Laconik

A CANNING Vale company has secured a State Government grant to help farmers get more bang for their buck.

Agriculture technology business Laconik has received a $20,000 grant as part of the 2018 Innovation Vouchers program.

Laconik co-founder Darren Hughes said the grant would be used to boost an internal software prototype they had developed to help farmers maximise nitrogen fertiliser efficiency.

“We use $300 million in WA a year to grow wheat, barley and canola and the current practice is to blanket apply the same amount of fertiliser across a paddock,” he said.

“The problem is they’re not matching the requirement of crops to the supply of fertiliser and are not supplying enough fertiliser to meet demand of crops.

“We have developed technology that accounts for spatial variability and tells growers the most profitability rate of nitrogen to apply on their crop and we used data and intelligence in that process.”

Mr Hughes said the prototype was already being trialled in WA and South Australia.

“To scale and grow and create a profitable business, we need to be able to do more and we will use the innovation voucher to develop software to scale and deliver across a larger area,” he said.
