Axemen swing into woodchop event

Central and North Burnett Times - - LOCAL NEWS -

BRUTE force was in action at the Mt Perry Axemen Sawyers 18th Annual Woodchop.

More than 20 men competed at the woodchop over three divisional championships, in addition to the novice and veteran events.

A cheerful crowd of locals applauded the axemen between sips of cold beer on the balcony of the Mt Perry Grand Hotel.

The heats worked on a timing handicap, with top seeds starting up to 37 seconds after lower seeds.

Event organiser Michael Dingle said “the handicaps are governed by the amount of prizemoney the competitor has won in that event”.

And the handicaps turned out spot on, with big money winners turning logs into kindling after a few broad strokes.

Veteran Chopper Gary Skipper said the competition was harder than usual.

“The wood’s a bit tough. We got it from Grafton,” Mr Skipper said.
