Love blossoms on greens

MUNDUBBERA boy Kurt Brown and his wife Emma have been crowned king and queen of Queensland Bowls.

The couple, who have been married just three weeks, had a fighting win at the state mixed pairs final at Bargara Bowls Club at the weekend.

The Browns defeated the Caboolture duo of Richard Strawbridge and Natasha Jones, 22-17.

It was Kurt’s third championship in four years, and the final was a tense affair, with Strawbridge and Jones leading at the 17th end with the score at 16-17.

With momentum swinging away from them, Kurt rescued the pair’s title hopes and they made up two shots on the 18th to lead by one.

With less than 15 minutes of play remaining, Strawbridge’s slow style saw the clock run down and the winner declared before 21 ends could be played.

Playing and winning together was a fitting reward for the Browns, who met at the state titles two years ago and delayed their honeymoon to compete this year.

But it was not love at first sight.

Kurt said he was unhappy about Emma muttering to herself the first time they met and consi- dered asking an official to get involved in the game.

“That was two years ago and now we’re married,” Kurt said.
