Celebrations for family business

Central and North Burnett Times - - LOCAL NEWS -

THE Maeyke family recently celebrated 10 years as owners of Mundubbera News and Offices-mart.

Community members gathered to join in the celebration and cake cutting.

Children wore themselves out on the jumping castle and had their faces painted. And all enjoyed taste-testing the varieties of gourmet sausages cooked by local sausage king Tim Duggan.

Much has changed since Ashley, Merv and Kay Maeyke were shown the ropes of their new business by previous owners Ross and Sandie Brimblecombe in 2002.

In the beginning, Ashley’s wife, Robyn, was still employed full-time at Mundubbera Medical Centre and then casually at the news agency.

Ashley took on the major role of managing the store, but it wasn’t long before Robyn was needed full time in the store.

“It’s a huge job running the day to day operations of a news agency, so it’s always been important to have family members around who can help out,” Ashley said.

With retirement on their minds, Merv and Kay are now planning to be around a little less.

“The shop runs like a welloiled machine,” Ashley said.
