Bell rings for one last time
THE school bell sounded for the last time for an ecstatic group of Year 12s last Friday.
The final day of school for the senior classes saw mass celebrations at Burnett State College, Monto State High School and Eidsvold State School.
There may have been a few tears of sadness, but the atmosphere was one of elation, as the reality of completing high school sank in.
The younger grades stood side by side, creating a tunnel for the graduates to walk down, as they left the schools for the last time as students.
Each of the Burnett State College students honoured the school’s longstanding tradition.
They rang the old fashioned school bell before leaving the school grounds.
The Year 12s waited at the exit for their fellow schoolmates to join them.
And when the bell was rung for the last time, they rushed forward as one, to water bomb their teachers and the remaining students, without fear of detention.
At Monto, school captain Madison May-Thomas threw his arms skyward, to celebrate the last time he would walk through the school gates.
“The feeling I have is excitement, I see it more as a beginning than an end,” Madison said.
Ally Pownell said she was sad to be leaving friends but was still considering her options for next year.
“I will definitely be busy, even if I don’t go to uni, as I will be helping out dad on the farm,” she said.
Eidsvold State School may have had only three Year 12 students, but celebrations were as jubilant as at other schools.
A special parade was held in their honour, before they walked down the traditional tunnel.
The Eidsvold Year 12s joined the teaching staff for morning tea. But the former students could celebrate only briefly. They had to begin the long process of getting ready for their formal!
