Biggen­den school community forum

Central and North Burnett Times - - SCHOOL NEWS -

AS a re­quire­ment of its Na­tional Part­ner­ship Pro­gram, the Biggen­den State School or­gan­ises a School Community Forum each year.

TheN­ational Part­ner­ship Pro­gram is an ini­tia­tive of the Fed­eral Gov­ern­ment to sup­port schools in low­so­cio-eco­nomic ar­eas.

The fund­ing that comes with it is to im­prove nu­mer­acy and lit­er­acy, which is be­lieved to be closely tied to im­prov­ing stu­dent per­sonal de­vel­op­ment and cre­at­ing closer links with the lo­cal community.

Per­sonal de­vel­op­ment pro­grams are of­fered by sup­port staff in­clud­ing the chap­lain, school based health nurse, youth work­ers and coun­sel­lors.

The bush walk­ing pro­gram is an­other ini­tia­tive in this area.

Community en­gage­ment oc­curs by invit­ing par­ents and fam­i­lies to school events, par­ent ed­u­ca­tion morn­ing teas and the community forum.

About 80 peo­ple have at­tended the 2012 forum in­clud­ingNorth Bur­nett Re­gional Mayor DonWaugh and Cr Lofty Wendt.

Act­ing prin­ci­pal Ka­t­rina Bayl­don wel­comed guests and in­vited them to par­tic­i­pate in the many sur­veys avail­able aswell as a tour of the trade train­ing cen­tre, home eco­nom­ics build­ing and sci­ence lab­o­ra­tory.
