Cattle club thrives
THE Monto Cattle Club has had a memorable year.
A small group of Monto State High School students has spent the year achieving big things.
The high point for the club was winning the school section of Rockhampton Beef Week.
In 2012 the club had a membership of 15 students from Years 8 to 12 with a total of eight beasts. The group met every Friday afternoon during term.
This year both school captains, Madison May-Thomas and Sarah Birch, were cattle club members.
Year 10 student Cassie Wilson said the determination of parents and residents had brought the club back to its full strength.
“The club was going to close but parents convinced the school to keep it open and now we are well known for our cattle club,” Cassie said.
“It is not just knowing cattle. When competing at shows we have to address crowds, and this has brought out confidence in public speaking.
“We are confident for next year, asmany of us have younger siblings who have grownup with cattle and are keen to join.
“We have already signed up three Year 7s for next year.”
This year the Monto club won every age group in stud judging at this year’s Rockhampton Show. Sarah Birch won the judging overall and Cassie Wilson won the Callide Carcase Competition with a record high score.
