Burnett champs take on sport’s best

Central and North Burnett Times - - LOCAL SPORT -

TWO North Burnett sports stars are preparing for Australian championships later this month.

Fifteen-year-old Siena Johnson of Biggenden will fly out from Brisbane next Tuesday, after being selected in the Queensland under-18 women’s cricket team.

Johnson will be headed for the Australian cricket championships in Ballarat.

And Mundubbera’s Adrian Taylor is on his way to Western Australia.

There Taylor will take his place in the Queensland U19 men’s softball team.

The Nox Bailey Shield U19 Men’s Championship, in which Taylor will compete as pitcher, has been an annual event since 1989.

It is held in a different state each year.

The 2013 championship will be held at the Mirrabooka International Softball Centre in Perth from January 13–19.

The tournament was named after Nox Bailey, for his commitment to developing men’s softball.

Nox Bailey was a powerful force behind men’s softball in Western Australia and, ultimately, Australia.

Today Australia dominates on a world stage in this particular age group.

The U19s have won the past four world championships. Taylor was a member of the winning U19 team last year and Queensland is defending champion.
