Young stars shine

Lit­tle ath­letes pre­pare to wow the re­gional com­pe­ti­tion in Bund­aberg

A TEAM of 14 of Monto’s Lit­tle Ath­letes club are off to Bund­aberg.

The Monto club is send­ing the team to the Cen­tral Coast Re­gional Com­pe­ti­tion on Fe­bru­ary 9.

Club man­ager Belinda Ste­ger said she was proud of ev­ery one of the young­sters.

The chil­dren nom­i­nate them­selves to en­ter an event and if they place first, sec­ond or third they will go to Bris­bane for the State Cham­pi­onships later in the year.

The day in Bund­aberg will fea­ture 70m, 100m and 200m sprints and the field events will be javelin, shot­put, dis­cus, high hump, long jump and triple jump.

Monto’s Taine Rooney is still in his first sea­son and only joined af­ter be­com­ing age cham­pion at Mulgildie State School’s in­ter­house ath­let­ics meet­ing.

The 10 year old will com­pete in the dis­cus, high jump, javelin, shot­put and long jump.

“I have been train­ing pretty hard,” he said.

“My best event is dis­cus and I am feel­ing qui­etly con­fi­dent.”

The chil­dren pic­tured also com­peted in the Pen­tathlon at Childers on De­cem­ber 1 with four oth­ers also com­pet­ing – Tasha O’Sul­li­van, Ri­ley and Saxon Allen and Tay­lah Ste­ger. Some of the no­table per­for­mances from that day saw Jessie and Mitch Moscrop win­ning gold medals, and Ri­ley Allen a bronze.

There were also many per­sonal bests achieved.
