Multi-talented teen a winner
FIFTEEN-year-old Jacinta Griffin was awarded the Junior Sports award at Biggenden’s Australia Day celebrations, in recognition of her representation at regional and state level in cricket, soccer and futsal.
She has been part of the Queensland teams since 2009, and captained the Queensland Secondary Schools Girls cricket team in 2012.
Griffin plays cricket for Combined Country/Western Suburbs in Bundaberg, and plays soccer in winter.
Although she had been playing futsal for only 12 months, she competed as part of the 15-year Girls Country team at the 2012 National School Futsal titles in Townsville in October.
Griffin has since been selected for the 15/16 Year Girls Australian Futsal team to tour Brazil in August this year.
The 18-day tour will include a training camp in Rio De Janiero, and the chance towatch the top Brazilian teams play.
“I am really looking forward to the trip, which will be my first overseas, although I’ll be a bit nervous without my family,” she said.
As the cost of the trip is more than $7000, Griffin and her mother Michelle plan to do some fundraising later in the year.
JUNIOR WINNER: Biggenden’s Jacinta Griffin.
