It’s time to tee off
Mr Golf calls for more members to help boost Monto club
WALWilkes is Monto’s Mr Golf. A club member from 1975-1980, Wilkes was a member of Childers Golf Club from 1981-1986 before returning to Monto, where he has been a member since 1987.
Not just content with negotiating greens, fairways and every other challenge on course, Wilkes has been heavily involved in the administration of his sport.
He has been a Monto committee member for all except three of his years with the club and at Childers it was only his first year when he did not hold an equivalent position.
He is now the secretary/treasurer at Monto and, although happy with the level of support from the town’s businesses, he sees club member- ship as a serious problem.
“We are really struggling for members. We need more members to get more income, as there are expenses involved with running the club,” Mr Wilkes said. “I have seen our membership halved in the last 20 years. It is currently 54.
“We try to keep fees at reasonable prices and we rely on voluntary labour to keep the club running.
“Sunday is our competition day while Thursday is social and I think people still suffering from the floods has impacted on our playing numbers this year.”
Monto Golf Club has been operating since 1933 and Wal feels it will bounce back. Some changes he has seen include an air-conditioned clubhouse and motorised buggies, which are now everyday features.
MORE PLEASE: Monto’s golfers enjoy their games but the club needs more members.
CLUB MAN: Wal Wilkes boasts nearly 40 years of service to Monto Golf Club.
