Roosters fire up to claim win

Central and North Burnett Times - - LOCAL SPORT -

THE first A-grade rugby league game played in Mundubbera between the Mundubbera Tigers and the Theodore Roosters in 50 years saw the Roosters win by two points in the final minute.

Solid defence from both teams kept the game scoreless for the first 14 minutes.

Theodore’s Matt Beezley put the first points on the board and Warren Hughes added the extras. Dropped balls frustrated the Tigers, allowing Theodore to add another six points with a converted try to Shane Hooper.

Taka Filial crossed for the Tigers just before the half-time siren and teams went to the break with the score 4-12. Mundubbera was the first to add points in the second half when a try by Lesiley Pailate was converted by Gage Paulson.

Minutes later Fevita Moniati added to Tigers’ score, putting the home team in the lead for the first time in the match – 14-12.

Theodore Roosters rallied and replied quickly with two tries, (to Tom Hutton and Josh Saltner) one of which was converted by Hughes.

With the Roosters eight points ahead and only 20 minutes on the clock, Tigers stepped up their attack, resulting in both Pailate and Filial crossing for their second tries of the game.

Filial converting his own try and Mundubbera had the lead 24-20.

An unfortunate error by the Tigers just before full time gave Theodore the opportunity to regain control and Glen Grills crossed.

With the game tied at 24 all, Hughes converted to decide the close encounter in favour of the Theodore Roosters.
