BURNETT State College’s Haydin Elsebach put in an impressive performance at the rugby league state championships.

Elsebach was selected to play forWide Bay at the Queensland School Sport 18 Years Rugby League State Championships in Kingaroy last week.

WhileWide Bay missed out on the finals, the team took out the Consolation Cup.

The lock is no stranger to representative football and has been selected forWide Bay every year since playing for the under 12s.

The 16-year-old said the highlight of his state championships was against SouthWest, when he dived over the line to score a try.

“We were swapping positions and I was on the wing,” Elsebach said. “It just came out to me and I got over the line.

“We were smashing them by then.”

Wide Bay thoroughly outclassed SouthWest and ran out winners 36–0.

The 18 years state championships is a rite of passage for elite Queensland players and has seen stars such as Cameron Smith, Sam Thaiday, Greg Inglis, Israel Folau and Justin Hodges take part.

Elsebach said playing in the tournament was a great experience.

“It’s good to play at that kind of level, as compared to a normal game,” he said. “I had a couple of good tackles, a couple of good scoots from half.”

Elsebach is a product of the Central Burnett Brumbies and has played in every division.

Now an East Bundaberg player, he was scouted for his talents by his favourite club, the Brisbane Broncos.

“Last year, I was part of Broncos Elite Player Development Squad,” Elsebach said.

The squad is for under 15 players and had four special training programs during the year.

Like most Gayndah footy players, Elsebach is looking forward to Queensland winning another the State of Origin series.

“I think we will win two games to one,” he said.

“I reckon it will be pretty close this year.”
