WHEN Mundubbera State School students Sophie Zipf, Matt Duffin and Bridie Emmerton all placed in the Wide Bay Cross Country competition, it was a proud moment for local runner Melanie Pope, who took it on herself to train them.

The students are headed to the state titles for primary school cross country in mid July.

Sophie Zipf placed first (10 years girls), Bridie Emmerton 5th (11 years girls) and Matthew Duffin 4th (11 years boys) at the Wide Bay trials in Bundaberg.

Most afternoons Ms Pope can be found running with the students, doing distance and hill work, strength exercises in the gym and imparting valuable advice.

“Melanie’s training has not only given them essential skills, but also lots of confidence,” Mundubbera State School principal Peter Townsend said.
