Understanding recovery after regional disaster
DEPUTY Mayor Faye Whelan has urged flood-affected North Burnett residents to attend one of the community meetings scheduled with Dr Rob Gordon to discuss the topic ‘recovery after a disaster’.
During the past 25 years Dr Gordon has worked with people affected by 30 disasters in Australia and New Zealand.
There are two opportunities for residents to meet with Dr Gordon at Mundubbera Community Development Association: Wednesday, June 26 from 6.30–8.30pm; and June 27 from 10am–noon.
Times for other community meetings are: Gayndah, June 26 at the town hall supper room from 3–5pm; Eidsvold, June 27 at the RM Williams Centre, 2.30–4.30pm; and Monto, June 27 in the town hall 6–8pm.
He specialises in studying and understanding short and longer term community responses to disaster.
During the sessions Dr Gordon will draw upon experience with recent natural disasters in Australia and New Zealand to provide an overview of what happens during the recovery process and some of the vulnerabilities and resilience factors for communities and affected residents.
“Dr Gordon conducted an excellent session with a small regional group earlier and I asked for him to be funded to come back up from Melbourne to reach every directly affected flood person and others.
“He has worked extensively with the Black Friday Fire regions and Lockyer Valley not to mention international events.
“Our people are having normal reactions to trauma and his visit may help people to move to the next point in their recovery.”
At the community meetings Dr Gordon will outline the priorities in the short term to provide a basis for successful recovery in the long term and discuss community and agency strategies to promote these outcomes.
Findings from international research into disasters will be presented as it throws light on the Australian situation. There will be opportunities to discuss current dilemmas and problems in the recovery program in the affected communities.
