Afghans vote

VOT­ERS in Afghanistan have turned out in droves for an in­tim­i­da­tion-fraught elec­tion, with women mak­ing up more than 34% of those to vote. The elec­tion saw an es­ti­mated seven mil­lion vot­ers turn out of the el­i­gi­ble 13 mil­lion vot­ers in the coun­try, de­spite threats of Tal­iban in­ter­fer­ence. United States Pres­i­dent Barack Obama was among sev­eral western lead­ers to con­grat­u­late the na­tion on the un­prece­dented turnout.
