GOAT PRICES UP
DRY conditions across the majority of the eastern states boosted goat slaughter for the first quarter of 2014, up 4% to about 430,000 head. Despite the increase in slaughter rates, the over-the-hook prices jumped 37% (or 60c) during the same period, to average 222c/kg cwt, the highest average March quarter price since 2011. Demand continues to grow with a record 32,671 tonnes of goat meat exported last year. The United States remained the major market, taking more than 50%. The latest MLA figures show new records have again been set for the March quarter, with exports up 11% on the same period last year.
