LOVE stories are often about castles and white knights.

Lloyd Duffin’s love story is about the quieter things: partnership, kindness and sticking together.

Mr Duffin lost his wife, Audrey, last year, but to hear him talk, she is still very much a part of him.

“We were married for 65 years, 4 months, and 14 days,” he said.

“It would be nice to have had more – I didn’t expect her to go.

“She was my friend and my partner and my lover.”

Although they were both born in Mundubbera, their relationship began when they were in Maryborough for work.

Lloyd went there to do a trade in the railway and Audrey worked at the Maryborough hospital as a nurse.

“That was the beginning of our romance,” Lloyd said.

“We did our courting on the bicycle.

“She sat on the handlebars and I sat on the seat and peddled.”

While Lloyd did the work at the beginning of their relationship, they soon developed a true partnership.

When they returned to the North Burnett, Audrey helped Lloyd in the paddock at their dairy.

With three children, she was also kept busy sewing clothes for the family.

“We had a few ups and downs, too, and lots of times we didn’t know where the

next dollar was coming from,” Lloyd said.

“We would just tighten our belts and do without things.”

His favourite thing about his late wife was her big heart.

Audrey was a caring person who would always help out others in need.

She had a knack with older people and helped when her grandmother had dementia.

“She used to sleep next to her to keep her from wandering,” Lloyd said.

“She was overgenerous sometimes and I would go crook at her, ‘you’ll give away everything we got’.”

Turning 89 in October, Lloyd pondered what he would do next.

He has been keeping himself busy with reading, gardening and his family in Mundubbera.

“I’m trying to make it to my nineties,” he said.

“I might go on a bus trip around the gulf.”
