WHILE other kids are kicking back for school holidays, three Monto runners are busy putting in some serious hard yards.

Lailah Mitchell, Lizzie Younger and Chelsea Knight are training up to five times a week ahead of the State Primary Schools Cross Country Championships in Brisbane this month.

On July 18-19 Lailah will run the 3km under 11s race, and Lizzie and Chelsea will face off in the 2km under 10s competition.

The event will bring more than 200 children from around Queensland, but Lailah remains undaunted.

“I’m hoping to win,” she said with a smile.

ALTHOUGH the competition will be tough at the State Primary Schools cross country Championships in Brisbane next month, Lailah Mitchell is determined to win.

“I just like coming first,” the focused under-11 competitor said.

After finishing second in the Wide Bay competition a month ago, Lailah was selected in the regional team and will travel to Brisbane for the 3km race on July 18-19.

She was selected last year as well, but didn’t end up competing after “she got an axe through her foot”.

Fellow Montonians Lizzie Younger and Chelsea Knight were picked in the under-10s team, after finishing third and fourth in the Wide Bay race and said they were nervous and excited for their biggest competition.

Although the little athletes are young, they have a solid work ethic and all three are putting in some serious hard yards ahead of their races.

As well as “running around all the holes on the golf course twice”, once a week Lailah is pushing herself to practise hill sprints on Golf Links Rd.

Lizzie also does hill sprints with Lailah, and runs around her farm, “following the trail of cow pats home”.

“I sing songs in my head to keep me going, but I’m not going to tell anyone which songs,” she said with a laugh.

Chelsea’s training schedule involves “running up and down hills, sometimes” and taking the dog for a canter around her home.

“I do like taking my dog Ruby on runs, but she’s not very good,” she said.

Despite the hard work, the girls said there are definitely some up sides to training so much.

Lizzie said: “Pasta and mac and cheese are good for energy, so I like it when Mum cooks me some before a race.”
