“WE DON’T have pub­lic whip­pings any­more,” Mag­is­trate Max­ine Bald­win said as she sen­tenced a 35-year-old North Bur­nett man to eight months’ jail for as­sault. Mag­is­trate Bald­win said the sen­tence – given the age of the vic­tim and the man’s vi­o­lent his­tory – was to send a key mes­sage “bod­ily harm was not ac­cept­able”.
