More to trade deal
I AM a wee bit concerned about the glowing media tributes to the wonderful free-trade agreement with Japan.
It seems to be very one sided: beef gets a tariff reduction from 38.5% to 19.5% over 18 years.
I would hardly say that it’s a “fair” or outstanding deal in comparison to what we have delivered.
There may not be too many producers still viable by then to take advantage of that minor reduction.
Japan is only about 40% self sufficient in food so in many ways they should be very concerned about the sustainability of our food industry.
We have given them energy assurances as they are 60% dependent on Middle East energy, with their supply routes under threat of conflicting territorial claims.
They have extracted a very good deal out of Australia, but they obviously still highly treasure their farmers
