I AM a wee bit con­cerned about the glow­ing me­dia trib­utes to the won­der­ful free-trade agree­ment with Ja­pan.

It seems to be very one sided: beef gets a tar­iff re­duc­tion from 38.5% to 19.5% over 18 years.

I would hardly say that it’s a “fair” or out­stand­ing deal in com­par­i­son to what we have de­liv­ered.

There may not be too many pro­duc­ers still vi­able by then to take ad­van­tage of that mi­nor re­duc­tion.

Ja­pan is only about 40% self suf­fi­cient in food so in many ways they should be very con­cerned about the sus­tain­abil­ity of our food in­dus­try.

We have given them en­ergy as­sur­ances as they are 60% de­pen­dent on Mid­dle East en­ergy, with their sup­ply routes un­der threat of con­flict­ing ter­ri­to­rial claims.

They have ex­tracted a very good deal out of Aus­tralia, but they ob­vi­ously still highly trea­sure their farm­ers
