Push to help local economy
WITH contractors moving on and small businesses closing down, North Burnett Regional Councillor Faye Whelan wants to boost our local economy with a “buy-local” campaign.
“We might be on track to quite a big downturn in our communities, and now’s the time we should do something to help stimulate it (our economy),” she said at the Council’s general meeting on Tuesday.
Although the campaign is still in the early planning stages, other Council members quickly got on board with some big ideas.
With the Queensland Weekender booked in to visit Monto on Monday, Councillor Paul Lobegeier suggested swaying other Channel 7 shows to follow their route north.
“The morning show Sunrise has run a few buy-local initiatives, let’s get Kochie (Sunrise host David Koch) on board with this,” Cr Lobegeier said.
Cr Whelan also suggested convincing contracting companies to donate a prize.
“I think we could get them to leave us a parting gift, in the last buy local campaign we even gave away a car,” she said.
But, in lieu of a huge prize, the Council said a couple of ipads should ‘get the ball rolling’ and encourage North Burnett residents to support local shop owners.
