Free camp area good for region
I READ with interest the article on page 10 of the CNBT on July 17 where Cr Francis made comment on the free camping that takes place at Wuruma Dam.
The idea of free-camping in a self-contained unit is just that.
You have a toilet and showers on board – if there is a toilet at the site then people will use it – and the on-board toilets will be emptied at the next dump point that is close to where they are or where they are heading.
The little piece about farmers having to pay extra money put onto their water bill to maintain the free camp area is total rubbish.
SunWater put its price on the water to try to recoup the infrastructure cost as well as running SunWater itself.
Cr Francis seems to forget that the towns of Monto and Eidsvold are doing it pretty tough, especially Monto with the closure of the railway, sawmill, butter factory and the mine.
These people that are free-camping spend a lot of money in our towns and should be encouraged, not closed out by trying to turn the area into a commercial business like Cania Gorge.
That would take people away from Cania and nobody wants that.
If the people using the free-camping wanted to go to a commercial place, they would be going to Cania.
