Roos leap to help out St John couple
MONTO St John Ambulance stalwarts Col and Claire Harris thought all their Christmases had come at once.
Last month they not only received a $42,000 grant from the State Government Gambling and Jupiters Casino Community Benefit Fund, but the Monto Roos rugby league team used their day off to build them a new shed.
“We are really just so happy, we are over the moon,” Mr Harris said.
“We also just got two great new members so we’ve had a huge morale boost.” Although they received the grant for the shed to house their lawnmower and spare stretchers two years ago, nobody had offered to put it up for them.
“Col messed up the chook pen at home so I thought we had better get someone else to do this,” Mrs Harris said with a laugh.
But after 22 years supporting the Monto Roos at their footy games, coach Damien Zieth thought this would be a great way to give back to the couple.
“Their support over the years has been outstanding so we thought this would be a good way to thank them,” he said.
Along with the labour put up by the whole team, DJ Steel donated the mesh for the concrete slab and Baldwin’s Sand, Gravel and Concrete donated the cement.
“It should have only taken us about two hours to build, but it took all day because we turned it into a bit of a party,” Roos player Scott Blythe said.
The Lister Street St John office will soon have a freshly painted roof, new guttering, cladding on the outside, a new lick of paint inside and air-conditioning, thanks to the government and Jupiters Casino grant.
“It means the Monto St John’s division will keep ticking on that bit longer,” Mr Harris said.
