A NEW group in Monto is getting farmers talking.

The outcome of a meeting on Wednesday was looking forwards to the idea of forming the Monto District Farmers Alliance.

The alliance would help farmers to communicate and spread ideas, and connect people with grants and subsidies available to help, and showing opportunities for new growth in the industry.

Dolores Fowler said opening up communication channels between Monto’s farmers could be a game changer for the industry.

“There’s nothing that brings farmers together regularly to talk about problems and how to solve them,” she said.

Following a meeting with some of the local farmers last Wednesday, Mrs Fowler met with Federal Minister for Flynn Ken O’Dowd on Tuesday, to discuss setting up the Monto District Farmers Alliance.

“Lots of people have told me they don’t know about the drought assistance packages that are available, helping people access this information would be one of the primary goals of an alliance,” she said.

Mrs Fowler said she had been inspired by the cane and sugar grower co-ops who have received widespread attention and results.
