Mates in race to 8km finish line
IT MAY have been a fun run, but when five Monto women took on the Botanic to Bridge in Gladstone at the weekend, no-one was taking the easy route.
Jenine Horrocks, Sharon Hanley, Jennifer Roth, Mia Francis and Kim Mundt all chose the 8km route over the 5km option for the race at 8am last Sunday.
“Jennifer and I had finally built up to running 8km just a couple of weeks ago,” Mrs Mundt said.
“My knees still felt like they were cut in half by the end of the race, but it was a lot of fun.”
Mrs Mundt said it was 18 months ago when she first got motivated to focus on health and fitness after completing the run leg of a triathlon, while Mrs Francis did the swim.
From there she gradually stepped it up to a 2.5km fun run, before the 5km Monto Mother’s Day fun run and the 8km this weekend.
“What was awesome was seeing all the people in their 60s running on Sunday,” she said.
“It shows you can never be too old to start getting into fitness.”
Mrs Francis said she now found fun runs pretty addictive.
“The exercise is good for you, they are something you can do with your friends and they usually raise money for a good cause, so you can give back to the community too,” she said.
She hoped the group effort from the Monto women would inspire others in the community to take control of their health and fitness as well.
“It’s never too late to start, and it’s really rewarding when you do,” she said.
