Niche crops have plenty of potential

Central and North Burnett Times - - NEWS -

CHIA seeds, bamboo and hemp have been earmarked as potential hot crops for the Monto area.

“There are endless opportunities with the changing pharmaceutical, beauty product and alternative health market,” Dolores Fowler said, after a farmers’ meeting last week.

“Mixed farming is the way to go.

“It means if one crop is not making money you have others to fall back on.”

But diversifying from the tried and trusted models of broadacre farming will require experts to help guide newcomers into these niche industries, Mrs Fowler says.

“If more government departments were willing to decentralise and set up out here in our region, they could provide our farmers with the knowledge and confidence to try out some of these crops.”
