FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK

Central and North Burnett Times - - VOICE OF THE BURNETT - Cr Faye Whelan, Acting Mayor

GREAT economic opportunity exists for North Burnett agricultural industries if we have the capacity to deliver produce into the Asian countries, especially China. This is the message I got last week when CEO Mark Pitt and I attended AG in the Asian Century National Export and Innovation Conference in Toowoomba. They are looking for clean and green produce, including fruit and vegetables, dairy and premium beef.

They consider food safety as a high priority and see Australia as a preferred supplier.

Agricultural industries are important to the stability and growth of the North Burnett and I see local government’s role to keep abreast of changes and facilitate connections between tiers of government to assist industry representatives to look for export opportunities.

Monto residents and visitors turned out for their Dairy Festival in the best spring conditions.

At the special council meeting September 30, council carried a resolution to seek further funding from government to construct a flood levee to protect Mundubbera town to the 2013 flood level. Should funding not be available the levee will not be constructed.

This week is Mental Health Week. Sadly last week I was personally aware of three people who took their own life. Mental illness is like many other ailments, such as kidney disease. It can strike anyone. Please seek help and if you know anyone who is struggling with depression reach out to them and guide them to professional help such as Lifeline 13 11 14 or consult your local doctor.
