MONTO State High School’s Malitha Cooper and Riley Allen will have the running, the jumping and the throwing covered at the State Championships for athletics this week.

The two have been selected to compete in the Wide Bay team for the statewide event in Brisbane’s QEII stadium from October 23–26.

“I was actually sick for the Wide Bay trials and had to send my previous results away to make the team,” Riley said on Tuesday.

“But I got in for triple jump

Riley Allen I go for runs around my paddock.

and long jump. My personal best in the triple is 12.43m and in long jump it’s about 5.8m.”

Malitha will compete in javelin and 100m hurdles and has been training hard for the big meet.

Once a week she will do a 1000m sprint, followed by 10 repetitions of 20m hurdles, then javelin throwing and weights training.

“The other athletes get better and better every time you go to a state event. Lots of them want to be professional athletes,” she said.

“So you have to work hard. I try and go for a 3km run every morning as well.”

While Riley has been training as well, he said it was a bit harder because he lived out of town.

“I go for runs around my paddock,” he said.

“I also do a bit of skipping when I can, that helps for the jumping events.”

Although the event runs until Sunday, the pair said they would definitely be back at school on Monday.

“There’s just no rest for the Year 12s,” Malitha said, with a laugh.
