Two views on hendra vaccine

MT PERRY farmer Bronwyn Allan wants to know why she should pay $1.45 a kilometre for a vet to come 55km each way for a simple procedure she can do herself.

That’s what she says it will cost to vaccinate her horses against hendra.

“If the drug company put out a Rural and Remote Pack and an owner declaration form, as they do with cattle, it would encourage more people to vaccinate.” Ms Allan said.

Another horse owner in Eidsvold vaccinates her horses to protect her family.

“It may never happen, I really think it would never happen, but I cannot take the risk that my horses may get infected,” Kathleen Roth said.

“I have been on and around horses since I was nine years old and I was mustering cattle on horseback only yesterday,” she said.

“What if I lost a horse to hendra? We would be devastated,” she said.

“I vaccinate my horses not because I have to, but because I think it is the right thing.”
