Monto teams raise funds aplenty on the green
MONTO golfers took to the green for a Movember charity three ball ambrose day at the weekend.
Organiser Alysha Curtis said with about 60 people and 20 teams showing their support, the event raised more than $1300 for charity.
“This is the fourth year it’s been on and we always get a huge turn-out,” she said.
Caine Austin, Cameron Curtis and Scott Pattie returned a winning three under 32 and 24.5 nett to nudge out Peter Hampson, Lloyd and Mathew Dahtler on 25 nett and 33 gross.
Mark Curtis has helped organise the event for four years now, and said he was pleased with the mix of young and old people who came out to support it.
“I’ve been doing the Movember for nine years as well. I would say the moustache does get stronger every year,” he said, with a laugh.
“It’s good to get a few more young ones on the green as well. It might get them interested in joining the club.”
Mr Curtis played in a team with Bryce Dorries and Ashley Roediger, who both travelled up from Yarraman for the day.
They came in third and were one over par, with 25 nett and 36 gross score.
“The weather was good and it was a great night as well. I went home about midnight,” Mr Curtis said.
Monto Golf Club stalwart John Lynn said the cracking
I haven’t seen that many people there for quite a few years.
turn-out reminded him of the golf club’s heyday in the 70s and 80s.
“I haven’t seen that many people there for quite a few years. And it was really good to see so many young ones there,” he said.
Mr Lynn has been a member on and off since 1972.
“I used to play for the exercise, but now I play for the frustration,” he said.
“It’s a good excuse for a bit of swearing when the ball doesn’t go where you want it to!”
But despite his commitment to golf, Mr Lynn didn’t get on board with the moustache growing movement.
“I never had one. I definitely don’t want a white moustache now,” he said.
He was also impressed with the pin shot winners, who donated their winnings to the bar tab.
Thanks to a haul of sponsorship from local businesses, prizes went to the top 13 teams.
Team approach shots were shared by teams captained by Glenn Evans (2), Shane Taylor, Peter Hampson and Curtis Reid (2) while individual pin shots went to Rhys Giles and Caine Austin.
